Pinterest has announced today that users no longer need an invitation to sign up, and anyone is free to join.
Now users can sign up for an account without having to wait for an invite, the company said in a blog post. Before today, people had to request an invite from Pinterest or be invited by a friend who already had a Pinterest account. Invites allowed the site to control the volume of new users so that its servers were not overwhelmed, according to Pinterest.
“We’re really excited to have the capacity to offer Pinterest to more people and if you’re a Pinner with friends who’ve been waiting on the sidelines, we hope you’ll let them know,” the blog reads.
In addition to using a Facebook or Twitter login, users can now also sign up with just an e-mail address.
In 2012 and Pinterest becoming the fastest-growing website in the history of the internet. It drives more referral traffic than LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube. It is the third most popular social network, behind Facebook and YouTube.
