A product recall is the procedure when a company learns of its product’s inappropriateness for its customers’ use. A customer can return the product in any condition and get a full refund. When a consumer buys a product, it rests on him to check appliance for safety. He is expected to follow the instructions while using the product.
Inform and Complain
If there is some problem in using the product even after strict compliance on your part, the product probably needs worry-free licensing of software by the manufacturer. You must inform about your concern to the company and complain to the pertinent consumer protection agency. The company will, in all probability, take serious note of your concerns and start the process of taking remedial action. There is no place for complacency in things that have generic defects. When it is established without any doubt that the product is dangerous in the condition it is in and if you use it anyway, you could be risking your life.
If you know about a product’s defect, report it immediately. It can turn out to be a lifesaver. There are instances of some unfortunate people using a recalled product – presumably they did not the learn about the recall – and losing their lives.
CPSC and Safety Standards
Consumer Product Safety Council is the agency that has the responsibility to look after the safety of people and try protect them from avoidable risks that may even cause death. $1 trillion is lost as a result of consumer products turning on the user. A variety of products like cigarette lighters, toys, household tools and chemicals cause these accidents. CPSC has succeeded in bringing down the number of incidents in the 40 years of its existence.
When CPSC is convinced of the defect in a product, it initiates its recall. It will publish the facts in press releases and also post it in its website. It invites parents to set up email alerts whereby they are informed of any new developments. There are also websites that let the members who had registered with it, know if they have a product that had been recalled in the past. They also inform if and when a recall is affected.
What You Should Do
When you are the recipient of a recall notice, you should immediately stop using the product. For example, if a toy has been recalled, put it away beyond the reach of your kid. If he insists on having a toy, try to get a similar product from shops to pacify him.
An electrical appliance tends to have a long cord. These cords should be neatly coiled and stowed in a safe place, usually behind the appliance. If a cord is frayed or the wire inside is exposed, replace it before using it again. Plugs can melt when excess electricity passes through it and they are unsafe to use. Discard them. In the U.S. the Underwriters laboratories’ approval is a good way to ensure safety. Do not use products without UL seal of approval and certification. Use an appliance only for what it is meant for. Do not experiment.
